Momiji

紅葉 ・ もみじ ・ momiji  |  こうよう ・ kouyou

Maple. A leaf that resembles an opened hand (palm) with outstretched fingers. Momiji can refer to any type of maple but in general, is used for the type of maple that has leaves that turn red or yellow in autumn. The leaf design can be used by itself (as scattered leaves or in a pattern), or as an element in a larger design.

The same kanji can be pronounced as kouyou (koyo) in which case it refers to the red and yellow color of autumn leaves.
