槭 ・ カエデ ・ kaede
Maple. A general term referring to maple (leaves). In kimono design it mostly refers to the leaves of the maple. The leaves are palm-shaped (they resemble an opened hand with outstretched fingers), some types of leaves have a smooth star shape while other varieties have thin jagged finger-like shapes. The leaves turn red or yellow in autumn.
Technically momiji (紅葉・もみじ) and kaede can both be used to refer to maple, but in general, momiji is used to refer to the variety of maple that has red leaves in autumn.
The origin of the word is related to the "hand" of a frog, which shape the leaf roughly resembles.
