Shifu

紙布・シフ・shifu


A fabric woven from kami-ito (fibers made from Japanese washi paper).

Shifu has a long history and was used by all classes. Shifu can be woven in combination with other fibers for either weft or warp.

  • kinu-shifu: silk (kinu) and paper 
  • men-shifu: cotton (men) and paper 
  • asa-shifu: ramie or hemp (asa) and paper 
  • moro-shifu: 100% paper (both warp and weft)

Few original items survive.
