Kusakizome

草木染め ・ くさきぞめ ・ kusakisome  |  草木染

Dyed using plant-based dyes. Dyed with natural dyes (as opposed to synthetic dyes (chemical dyes)). The process of plant-based dyeing.

The term is relatively new and was only introduced in the Taisho era as part of a movement to preserve natural ways of dyeing. Originally the term Plant Dyeing (植物染め) was used and this term itself was only introduced in early Meiji to distinguish natural dyes that had been used up until that time from the newly introduced synthetic dyes.
