Kumo

雲 ・ くも ・ kumo  |  雲気 ・ ウンキ ・ unki

Cloud. Clouds can be used by themselves but are often used as a design to partially obscure scenery or to separate different patterns. Many shapes, some stylized, some more realistic exist.

Some common cloud designs include.

  • Onigumo (鬼雲) - a swirling (angry) cloud design. The clouds contain swirls and sometimes little "tails" to indicate movement. The swirls sometimes resemble the lines used in karakusa patterns.
  • Yokogumo (横雲) - a horizontal (yoko) cloud design. Many times very stylized. the difference between a kasumi (haze) pattern and this pattern is based only on the context.

Unki (or ungi) is an old way of refering to cloud like patterns or the movement of clouds.

See also Kumodori Pattern.
