Iromuji

色無地・いろむじ・iromuji

A plain colored formal to semi-formal kimono. Iromuji literally translates to "no-color", but it actually refers to kimono dyed in a plain color. Iromuji kimono with one or more kamon (family crest) are considered formal kimono (the more kamon the more formal), and because of the discreet/plain design can safely be worn on almost any formal occasion.

Dyeing of iromuji kimono is a specialist job as it takes a lot of experience to be able to create the required color and make sure that the entire kimono is dyed in the same hue.

The material used as a base can be a plain weave or chirimen fabric or can have woven designs.
