Harigi

張木 ・ はりぎ ・ harigi  |  hariki

A wooden clamp with small needle-like teeth, used in pairs to keep a piece of cloth stretched for dyeing or drying.

The clamps in general have the width of a tanmono (bolt of fabric).

The clamps are attached to poles using ropes and attached to each end of the fabric using the clamping mechanism and the teeth. The ropes are pulled to stretch the fabric between the poles. Used in combination with shinshi-bari (bamboo sticks with a small needle at each end) that are placed at regular intervals to keep the width of the fabric taut.

Weights might be used to keep to fabric surface aligned flat to the floor.
