Genji-gumo

源氏雲・げんじぐも・genjigumo


A cloud design dating back to the Edo period, and used extensively in the Tale of Genji illustrations (Genji Monogatari Emaki) that were popular at that time. A partial cloud cover revealing the world/scenery below. 

It shows stylized clouds from above allowing a birdseye view between the clouds on the partially obscured scenery below. Perspective and proportions are often exaggerated. 

The clouds can be of a simple plain outlined design so the focus is on the scenery, or they can be elaborately decorated blending into the overall design.
